Cost of Running a Business as a Sole Prop

Cost of Running a Business as a Sole Prop

As a sole proprietorship in British Columbia (BC), the cost structure and steps to set up your business are relatively straightforward. Here are the some of the general steps and associated costs

  • Business Name Registration: Choose a business name and register it with the BC government. The cost for name reservation starts around CAD 30 plus taxes.

  • Business License: Check with your local municipality to determine if a business license is required. The cost of a business license varies depending on the municipality and the nature of your business. It can range from CAD 50 to a few hundred dollars per year.

  • Business Number (BN): If you plan to hire employees or register for certain government programs, you may need a Business Number (BN) from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). There is no cost to obtain a BN.

  • GST/HST Registration: If your business generates more than CAD 30,000 in annual revenue, you must register for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). There is no fee to register for GST/HST.

  • Accounting and Bookkeeping: It's essential to keep accurate financial records for tax purposes and to understand the financial health of your business and safely navigate the required obligations as a Busines Owner.

  • Business Insurance: Consider obtaining business insurance to protect your assets and mitigate risks. The cost of business insurance varies based on factors such as the nature of your business, coverage needs, and revenue.

  • Ongoing Costs: As the sole proprietor, you are responsible for the business's ongoing expenses, such as marketing, office supplies, utilities, professional fees, and any required licenses or permits specific to your industry.

It's important to note that the costs mentioned above are general estimates, and actual costs may vary based on factors such as the nature and size of your business, location, industry-specific requirements, and any professional assistance you seek.
